Young Europeans step into the shoes of business and policy leaders for one day

19 October 2016

35 young Europeans participated in Leaders-for-a-Day on 19 October an initiative of JA Europe offering them the opportunity to learn from top leaders by shadowing them during an entire working day.

Leaders notably included Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, several MEPs, CEOs and top managers from AXA, ExxonMobil, HSBC, ManpowerGroup, Nokia, Sage, Telefonica, and many more. At the end of the day, students and leaders were invited to exchange their views on career and skills development during a cocktail celebration, including a presentation of ManpowerGroup’s recent report ‘Millennial Careers: 2020 Vision’.

Leaders-for-a-Day, organised by JA Europe in cooperation with AmChamEU, and supported by ManpowerGroup and Microsoft, is designed to offer further opportunities to students who completed the JA Company Programme and obtained the Entrepreneurial Skills PassTM (ESP), a unique certification of their entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and attitude.

This initiative aims to inspire young people to be more entrepreneurial and encourage mentoring opportunities between students and experienced professionals.

“This is a unique and possibly first-time opportunity for these young people to spend a day with a senior leader. It helps demystify the working world and because they’ve earned their Entrepreneurial Skills Pass at school, they have important experience to share with the leader as well. Actions like Leaders-for-a-Day leave a lasting impact on both sides,” said Caroline Jenner, CEO of JA Europe.

Young people benefit from this experience to expand their network and better position themselves to enter the labour market. Studies have shown that students who have contact with employers while in school are more likely to be employed and 3-6 times less likely to be jobless.

“By 2020 Millennials will make up over a third of the global workforce. A recent survey conducted by ManpowerGroup classified them as the ‘work hard, play hard’ generation. Millennials joining the workforce have new expectations and so leaders have no option but to refresh their style of management and find new ways of working to encourage collaboration, communication and ‘fun’. ‘Leader for a day’ is a unique opportunity for each leader to spend time with them in a work context and as a result, prepare themselves and their business for this new world of work.” said Sébastien Delfosse, HR & Legal Director ManpowerGroup Belux

At the end of the day, students and leaders shared their experiences during a celebration cocktail. exchange views linked to ManpowerGroup’s study “Millennial Careers: 2020 Vision”.
